About Sharon
Counselling Experience
Sharon is a Counsellor and Registered Comprehensive Nurse. She completed her nursing training in 1990 at Taranaki Polytechnic (now WITT). She worked in Mental health services in Taranaki Base Hospital until moving to the UK in 1997 and working in the various fields of specialist mental health until 2013. This included hospital adult mental health services (community and inpatient), police liaison mental health. Whilst in the UK, Sharon completed an MA in Consulting and leading in organisations: psychodynamic and systemic approaches.
On her return to New Zealand Sharon was employed in a kaupapa Maori mental health service for 9 years. She has been in private practice since 2016 and has been contracted to a number of services for the provision of counselling and professional supervision. Sharon has been certified as an Equine assisted Therapy and learning practitioner and works with horses to provide a unique and effective intervention for a variety of psychological issues.
She has a caring, respectful and non-judgmental approach to everyone she meets and has a strong appreciation for the opportunity and privilege to assist individuals and families to work through challenging times.
Insurance experience
Sharon spent four years working in a reinsurance clinical team as a Mental Health Clinical Specialist and then for 3 years, worked privately in the UK, consulting to insurance companies, providing clinical opinions on a wide range of L&H insurance claims. She has advised on individual and group income protection, waiver of premium, mortgage protection, critical illness and total and permanent disability claims across the spectrum of definitions of disability.
Sharon lives in rural Taranaki with her family, horses and other animals.
Sharon is of Nga Rauru and Ngai Tahu descent.
